Why always me?

Do you sometimes feel like the Grand Central Station of all queries and problems?

Are you the ‘Encyclopedia of Everything’ for everyone in your world?

If you have found yourself at the end of the day with mental overload, brain whizzing, unable to take in another single detail, and hoping that the next person you encounter doesn’t have too much to load on to your pile, you are definitely not alone.

Here’s something to think about though…

What does this mean?

What does it mean when everyone comes to you for your opinion, advice, solutions, a sympathetic ear or another perspective?

I’ve left a space here to prompt you to stop scrolling to the answer until you come up with it yourself!

It means you are their leader.

If people gravitate to you and require – or even demand – your input, it’s because they respect you, look up to you and follow you.

You are their leader.

I tell you this to help you realise it’s a positive thing (sit up a little straighter now and puff out the chest, even a secretly smug inner smile is allowed).

However, if people around you have elevated you to that level of leadership, it means you will have additional demands on your time and energy, sometimes over and above what you can actually handle.  So, you need to consciously raise your awareness of what your needs are and take steps to avoid tiring out.

You will now need:

  1. Additional and clearer boundaries around your time, commitments and what people expect of you. Note: you will to decide what your boundaries are, not what boundaries will suit others. 

  2. ‘Me time’ so that you can have rest periods that match your busy periods, pro-rata!

  3. To delegate more or source additional help, whether that’s at home or in work.

  4. A mindset that is open to embracing the growth, opportunities and challenges that are part and parcel of this stage of your leadership journey. You are on that journey anyway, so you might as well grab the wheel and be in control of it.

  5. To decide what kind of leader you want to be.  Then establish habits and behaviours that make you the leader you want to be.
